History and Physics of The Klein Paradox

چکیده
The early papers by Klein, Sauter and Hund which investigate scattering off a high step potential in the context of the Dirac equation are discussed to derive the ’paradox’ first obtained by Klein. The explanation of this effect in terms of electron-positron production is reassessed. It is shown that a potential well or barrier in the Dirac equation can become supercritical and emit positrons or electrons spontaneously if the potential is strong enough. If the well or barrier is wide enough, a seemingly constant current is emitted. This phenomenon is transient whereas the tunnelling first calculated by Klein is time-independent. It is shown that tunnelling without exponential suppression occurs when an electron is incident on a high barrier, even when the barrier is not high enough to radiate. Klein tunnelling is therefore a property of relativistic wave equations and is not necessarily connected to particle emission. The Coulomb potential is investigated and it is shown that a heavy nucleus of sufficiently large Z will bind positrons. Correspondingly, as Z increases the Coulomb barrier should become increasingly transparent to positrons. This is an example of Klein tunnelling. Phenomena akin to supercritical positron emission may be studied experimentally in superfluid 3He

Soliton-like Solutions of the Complex Non-linear Klein-Gordon Systems in 1 + 1 Dimensions
In this paper, we present soliton-like solutions of the non-linear complex Klein-Gordon systems in 1+1 dimensions. We will use polar representation to introduce three different soliton-like solutions including, complex kinks (anti-kinks), radiative profiles, and localized wave-packets. Complex kinks (anti-kinks) are topological objects with zero electrical charges. Radiative profiles are object...
متن کاملSADDLE POINT VARIATIONAL METHOD FOR DIRAC CONFINEMENT
A saddle point variational (SPV ) method was applied to the Dirac equation as an example of a fully relativistic equation with both negative and positive energy solutions. The effect of the negative energy states was mitigated by maximizing the energy with respect to a relevant parameter while at the same time minimizing it with respect to another parameter in the wave function. The Cornell pot...
متن کاملA New Technique of Reduce Differential Transform Method to Solve Local Fractional PDEs in Mathematical Physics
In this manuscript, we investigate solutions of the partial differential equations (PDEs) arising inmathematical physics with local fractional derivative operators (LFDOs). To get approximate solutionsof these equations, we utilize the reduce differential transform method (RDTM) which is basedupon the LFDOs. Illustrative examples are given to show the accuracy and reliable results. Theobtained ...
متن کاملThe Effect of Teaching History of Physics on Student-Teachers’ Understanding of the Process of Model Construction in Physics
To improve student teachers’ understanding of the process of model construction in Physics, it was hypothesized that teaching the history of Physics may be of help. To test this hypothesis, two groups of senior year female student-teachers in Teaching of Physics at one of the campuses of Farhangian University in Tehran were chosen: One group had passed a course on the history of Physics, while ...

Electromagnetic negative refraction in metamaterials has attracted increasingly great interest, since its first experimental verification in 2001. It potentially leads to the applications superior to conventional devices including compact antennas for mobile stations, imaging beyond the diffraction limit, and high-resolution radars, not to mention the anamolous wave propagation in fundamental o...
